Overview

We return once again to the wonderful RSC Theatre in Stratford Upon Avon to see the magical and wonderfully festive production of A Box of Delights.   Orphaned schoolboy Kay Harker is caught up in a battle between two powerful magicians. Can he save Christmas?  ‘There are tricks…and then there’s magic!’  After a seemingly chance encounter on a train, orphaned schoolboy Kay Harker finds himself the guardian of a small wooden box with powers beyond his wildest dreams. Caught up in a battle between two powerful magicians, Kay fights to save not just the people he loves but also the future of Christmas itself.

This fantastically festive production is directed by Justin Audibert (The Taming of the Shrew 2019, The Jew of Malta 2015) and designed by RSC Associate Designer Tom Piper.

This short break also incorporates a fascinating back-stage tour and free time in Stratford Upon Avon.

Itinerary

Tuesday 28th November

We depart Sussex this morning and make our way north. Having made a suitable comfort stop we arrive in Oxford where we break our journey. You will be set down near the wonderful Ashmolean Museum and close to the shopping area. Time for lunch and to explore at your leisure before we continue to our hotel arriving late afternoon. Dinner is included tonight.

Wednesday 29th November

We make our way to Stratford. This morning we divide into two groups with one group enjoying a special backstage tour of The RSC Theatre while the other group enjoy some free time in Stratford before the groups swap over.  The guided tour is a 60-minute journey that runs daily, led by their experienced tour guides, and every tour will be truly unique.   The story of the RSC  begins in the Front of House areas, taking a look at the hidden history of the most-seen areas of the building and introducing visitors to the people and stories that have shaped what the RSC is today.  No day at the RSC is the same so, depending on what is happening on the day of your tour, you will get to see a part of the building that is not usually accessible to the public.  While you're with the guide you could be led through the Royal Shakespeare Theatre to discover more about the auditorium and backstage, or the state-of-the-art Costume Workshop to delve deeper into the expert craftmanship that goes into costume making from past to present, or, from April 2023, you could be taken into the newly transformed Swan Theatre.  To continue your journey of the RSC’s history, the free exhibition The Play’s The Thing opens daily from midday. Lose yourself in this hidden gem as you uncover stories, props and costumes from the RSC collection.  We return to our hotel early afternoon with time to relax before we make our way back to Stratford for the pre-show dinner in the theatre restaurant included in the price. The menu will be available in October and I will contact you for your choices. This evening we attend the performance of A Box of Delights which commences at 19.15.

Thursday 30th November

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before we depart Stratford Upon Avon and commence our journey back to Sussex. We break our journey in Henley On Thames where you have  time for lunch before we continue our journey home. We expect to arrive back in the Maresfield area by approximately 18.00
