Overview
We enjoy a private guided tour of the nursery with Chris Lane. Tea and cake included. The nursery specialises in Hamamelis and contains one of the three National Plant Collections, these are all planted in rows for easy viewing and comparison and over 500 plants are on display. These are assessed on a regular basis by the Woody Plant Trials Committee of the Royal Horticultural Society, and after judging worthy plants are given the Award of Garden Merit. Apart from H. virginiana which flowers in October and November, they all flower in the winter, between December and March, unaffected by frost. Individual plants have a flowering period of four to six weeks, depending how cold the weather is. Flower colour, particularly in the hybrids can range from pale yellow, through to red and many of them have good scent, from sweet to spicy. An added bonus in many cultivars is the autumn colour of the foliage, which can range from yellow through to orange and red. PLANTS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE ON THESE DAYS ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVED BASIS. STURDY FOOTWEAR AND WARM CLOTHING ESSENTIAL PLEASE. After our tour we make the short journey to Polhill Nursery where you can get lunch and browse this large nursery.
