Overview

This short winter break takes us back to the lovely City of Wells for a long overdue visit. England’s smallest City by virtue of the impressive 13c Cathedral. The City has remained remarkably unspoilt and has many other historic buildings including the moated Bishop’s Palace, Vicars’ Close, St Cuthbert’s Church and a good local museum. We will also take you to see the extraordinary sight of thousands of Starlings performing aerial acrobatics over The Avalon Marshes at Ham Wall RSPB. Staying at The lovely Swan Hotel in the city centre this will be a fascinating short trip

Itinerary

Sunday 9th February

We depart from Maresfield at approximately 10.00 and make our way west. Making a suitable stop en route we arrive in Wells early afternoon. For those that are interested there is a Choral evensong at The Cathedral at 15.00. The Cathedral is just a few minutes walk from the hotel. Time to relax and settle into our hotel.

Monday 10th February

This morning we will be joined by our Blue Badge Guide who will take us on a tour of the smallest city in England. We will also visit The Bishops Palace.  This afternoon we board the coach and make our way to Glastonbury possibly the quirkiest town in England. Steeped in history, myth and legend our guide will tell us all about this fascinating town and its attraction as a place of pilgrimage. We will also visit The Abbey which is set in 37 acres of beautifully peaceful parkland. Since Medieval times, the Abbey has held legendary status as the earliest Christian foundation in Britain linked to Joseph of Arimathea and the burial place of King Arthur

Tuesday 11th February

This morning is free for you to explore this charming little city and enjoy lunch before we make an afternoon visit to Clarke’s Shopping Village in Street. Situated on the site of the old C & J Clark factory the outlet has 90 big name retailers for you to browse. A 10% discount card will be available to you on the day.  At dusk we visit Ham Wall to see the amazing sight of the Starling Murmuration. We shall be accompanied by a local bird expert who will be able to tell us all about what is happening as the birds put on an incredible display of aerobatics. We return to The Sawn Dinner at the hotel

Wednesday 12th February

This morning we depart Wells and make our way to Milestones Museum of Living History near Basingstoke where you will be able to explore the museum’s streets, shops and buildings and discover how people used to live, buy a ration of sweets from our 1940s sweet shop, view the unique collection of vintage vehicles and have a go in the penny arcade! Your trip to Hampshire past will take you as far back as the age of the Victorians, with cobbled streets, a replica Victorian school room – complete with chalkboard and teacher’s desk – and even a working printing press. Lunch is available. Later in the afternoon we make our way back to Sussex where we expect to arrive back in the Maresfield area by approximately 18.00.
