Overview

Once again we return to Normandy under the expert guidance of Colonel Martyn Taylor retd, who will lead us on an expedition to visit the landing beaches and battlegrounds of June 1944. The single biggest invasion force ever assembled landed at points along the Normandy coast from the mouth of the Orne to Les Dunes de Varneville on the Cotentin peninsula. Martyn is still involved in training young officers and leads trips to the battlefields where lessons from past campaigns still have relevance and are used in current day training. His family have a long soldiering history that includes a VC.  He has planned a fascinating week with visits to some of the best known sites and also some lesser known areas.

Itinerary

Friday 13th March

An early start from Sussex sees us making our way to Dover for our channel crossing to France. On arrival in Calais we continue our journey to Normandy and, having made a suitable comfort stop, we arrive at our hotel in the early evening. A buffet dinner is included tonight.

14 - 16 March 2026

During our three days Martyn will take us on a journey from the edge of the British Sector, at the mouth of The Orne, right down to the edge of Omaha Beach at the Pointe Du Hoc.

Highlights will include:

The Merville Battery, so courageously taken by the Parachute Regiment, Pegasus Bridge and nearby Café Gondré, the first building to be liberated. Gold Beach and the advance through to Crepon. Courseulles-Sur-Mer where Winston Churchill and King George VI visited ten days after the landings.  The new British D-Day Memorial at Vers-Sur-Mer.  Arromanches where the famous Mulberry Harbour was built.  The senior CMWG Cemetery for Normandy at Bayeux.  Pointe du Hoc where the American Rangers fought and the scars of battle are still clear to see. Omaha Beach and The American Cemetary at St Lauren-Sur-Mer. We will also try and fit in a visit to The German Cemetery at La Cambe.

17 March 2026

After breakfast we depart our hotel and make our way back to Calais. Having made a suitable stop we arrive in Calais for a mid-afternoon channel crossing back to Dover. We aim to be back in the Maresfield area by approximately 19.00hrs
