Overview

We are delighted to be able to offer you the opportunity to see what we think will become the hot new ticket within the next few years, Kynren. Our five day trip includes some fascinating visits but the undoubted highlight will be The Epic Tale of England

The Story

Bringing 2000 years of history, myth and legend to life in a spectacular family performance. As dusk falls, you take your seat in anticipation in front of a vast stage. The lake is still. You are immersed in the music. You are watching King Harold rejoicing, having conquered the Vikings, but his celebrations are short-lived. The tranquil waters of the lake begin to ripple, its surface begins to swirl. Suddenly a Norman longship erupts from its depths, bearing a fierce William of Normandy and his roaring men who leap ashore, swords held high.  This is just one of Kynren’s 29 scenes which takes you on an action-packed and emotional journey through time. Encompassing the Roman occupation, the Viking and Norman invasions, medieval feasts and jousting, the splendour of the Tudors, the English Civil War, the Georgian Renaissance, Industrial Revolution and two world wars right up to the current period and many other scenes in between – Kynren takes you on a spellbinding voyage through history, myth and legend, as seen through the eyes of Arthur, the son of a mining family from the North East of England.

Brought to you by a 1,000-strong cast and crew who have been professionally trained by international performance experts in dance, theatrical combat, pyrotechnics, and equestrianism. The huge cast is joined on stage by the animals of Kynren, collectively bringing each scene to life amidst jaw-dropping special effects and an original sound track by the award-winning composer Nathan Stornetta.

Itinerary

Thursday 25th July

We depart Sussex and make our way north. Having made a suitable stop we make our lunch time break at Stamford. Time for a look round this lovely market town before we continue to our hotel.

Friday 26th July

This morning we make our way to Raby Castle. Raby is without doubt one of the most impressive intact castles in the North of England. Built in the 14th century by the powerful Nevill family, it has a long history. Home to Cecily Nevill, mother of two kings of England, it was also the scene of the plotting of the Rising of the North and a Parliamentary stronghold during the Civil War. You will also enjoy exploring 5 acres of traditional 18th century ornamental Walled Gardens including fabulous yew hedges, trees, plants and ornaments from the 18th and 19th century. Today, Raby is the seat of Lord and Lady Barnard and the Vane family. We allow plenty of time for you to visit this impressive castle and grounds. Refreshments are available. This afternoon we visit the gardens at Thornton Hall where  "From the minute you walk through the small door into this amazing garden you are hit by the wow factor". Sue and Mike Manners moved in to Thornton Hall in 1989 and began to create what has been described as one of the best new gardens in the country and what Sue describes as “a hobby that got out of hand”. Every inch of the endless curvaceous borders snaking along the stone walls are planted with colour, plant association, form and foliage taken into consideration. It is very much a plantsman's garden, with intimate secretive areas with quirky and unusual benches, seats, statuary and sculptures. The garden is well appointed for all to stroll at their leisure and enjoy the gardens flamboyant colour, imaginative plant combinations and vistas and to breathe in the wonderful fragrance that fills this magical garden.

Saturday 27th July

This morning we make our way to Wynyard Hall Hotel to visit their wonderful gardens A showcase of delicate artistry, The Gardens are the epitome of beauty, with vivid flowerbeds, over 3,000 stunning roses, from floribundas and climbing roses to the statement English rose , and a careful selection of shrubs and trees, highlighted with graceful water features and meandering paths.

The Gardens have been intricately designed and created by multi RHS award-winning landscape architect Alistair Baldwin, along with rose expert Michael Marriott from David Austin Roses and Wynyard Hall’s own dedicated team of gardeners.

We return to the hotel for some relaxation time before the big event this evening and an early supper.  This evening we make our way to Bishops Auckland for this evenings performance.  You are about to experience an epic adventure, the UK's 'must-see' live action outdoor spectacular, performed by a cast and crew of 1,000 on a 7.5-acre stage! Starting at sunset and ending in starlight, Kynren is an enthralling live action family entertainment.

Sunday 28th July

After a late night we enjoy a Sunday morning lie in before we head out for a tour of the delightful Durham Dales with one of our favourite guides, Jan Williams. We drive out through the picturesque village of Blanchard before enjoying a break at The Durham Dales Centre which is situated in Stanhope, Weardale in the heart of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You will also get the opportunity to see High Force Waterfall one of the most spectacular waterfalls in England. From its rise as a trickle, high on the heather covered fells at the top of the North Pennines, to the top of the Whin Sill rock at Forest-in-Teesdale, the River Tees steadily grows and gathers pace then it suddenly and spectacularly drops 21 metres into the plunge pool below. A gentle and pretty woodland walk leads you to view this spectacular sight at the base of the falls. We return to our hotel later in the afternoon.

Monday 29th July

We depart Redworth Hall after breakfast and commence our journey back to Sussex. Having made suitable stops en route we expect to be back in the Maresfield area by approximately 18.30.
