Overview

Gertrude Jekyll designed this important historic garden in 1908. John and Rosamund Wallinger bought the almost derelict property in 1984. What they did not realise was that underneath the jungle were the foundations of a very special garden, designed for a house belonging to Charles Holme, a leading figure in the Arts and Crafts movement. They had very little knowledge of gardening until they came to Upton Grey; that was soon to change with the unearthing of an important piece of garden history. They decided to research the garden and, having discovered a full set of plans they obtained copies and set about the restoration. What was recreated is now believed to be the most complete and authentic Jekyll garden in existence – a living museum of Jekyll design. We begin with coffee on arrival and a welcome from Rosamund, she and her gardener will then answer any questions while you explore the gardens at your leisure with the garden guide, map and lists of plants in the Getrude Jekyll borders.   We depart the Manor House at approximately 1.00pm and make our way to the Basingstoke Canal for our cruise from Odiham on the John Pinkerton II.  The fully licensed bar is open on all cruises. You can purchase real ale, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, drinks, and light refreshments. The covered cabin is spacious. On fine days there is an opportunity to take the fresh air from the front well deck.  We suggest you bring a picnic to eat on the coach or on the boat.  Please buy a drink on board and do not bring your own alcohol.  There is a toilet on board. Trips are either eastwards towards Winchfield or westwards towards Greywell and Odiham and King John’s Castle.  The trip direction is determined by the skipper.  Please note that access into the boat is by five steps down from the rear deck, with handrails on each side. There is no mechanical lift for wheelchair users.
