Overview
Rouen, situated on the banks of the River Seine, is Normandy’s vibrant, historic and cultural capital. Monet’s famous depictions of Rouen Cathedral have made this vast edifice many visitors’ favourite building in the city and we are staying in a four star hotel right in its shadows. There are also many fine museums to explore, not to mention the Gros Horloge clock tower, France’s oldest inn, La Couronne, and the beautiful modern church dedicated to Joan of Arc. A highlight of this tour will be a visit to The famous water lily ponds and colourful gardens created by the Master of Impressionism, Claude Monet, at his home in Giverny, close to Rouen, which gave him his greatest artistic inspiration and have made this tiny river Seine-side village famous all over the world.

Itinerary
Friday 14th April
We depart Sussex and make our way to Dover for our morning ferry to Calais. On arrival in France we continue our journey arriving in Rouen late afternoon.
Saturday 15th April
Rouen really does defy description – it is one of the most beautifully preserved medieval towns in Europe, despite its often turbulent past. This morning we are joined by a local guide who will conduct a walking tour of this Historic City. After the tour you are free to spend the afternoon as you wish. You may like to visit The Musée des Beaux-Arts which houses one of the most outstanding public collections in France. It features paintings, several Monet masterpieces, sculptures, drawings and art objects from every school, ranging from the 15th century to the present day. In the cathedral, immortalised by Claude Monet, you can see the tombs of Richard the Lionheart and William the Conqueror’s grandfather.
Sunday 16th April
This morning we make our way to Giverny, home for over 40 years to the Impressionist painter, Claude Monet. Inspiration for many of his great works, the artist’s house has been lovingly restored, and now contains reproductions of his paintings. In the gardens, replanted to Monet’s design, you will find his studio and the lily pond subject of so many of his pieces. You will be able to stroll around the magnificent gardens and lily pond that Monet created. We have arranged a 10.00 time slot so you will have time to wander before it gets busier later in the day. There will be time to explore in the village, maybe visit the Church where Monet is buried and then find some lunch before we head back to Rouen
