Overview
Our visit to RSC Stratford Upon Avon this year will see us attending a performance of The Red Shoes in the wonderfully intimate Swan Theatre. Once again we will enjoy dinner at the theatre prior to the performance as well as free time in Stratford.
‘What’s wrong with wanting to dance?’
Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world, or so they say. When an orphaned young woman is taken in by some local do-gooders, she is expected to be seen and not heard. Dazzled by a pair of beautiful shoes, she sees the chance to do and be so much more, but soon her feet betray her, taking her to places she does not wish to go. As we head towards the festive season get up close to the magic as playwright Nancy Harris brings Hans Christian Andersen’s dark fairy tale into the 21st century in the intimate surroundings of the Swan Theatre.
Itinerary
Tuesday 19th November
We depart Sussex this morning an make our way north. Having made a suitable comfort stop we arrive in Oxford where we break our journey. You will be set down near the wonderful Ashmolean Museum and close to the shopping area. Time for lunch and to explore at your leisure before we continue to our hotel arriving late afternoon. Dinner is included tonight.
Wednesday 20th November
This morning we make the short journey to Compton Verney where there will be time to explore the many exhibitions. Compton Verney is home to six diverse collections of nationally and internationally significant art from around the world, including British Folk Art, Chinese bronzes, British Portraits and works from Northern Europe and Naples. You can also find objects of inspiration and original textile designs by Enid Marx in our Marx-Lambert Collection. The gallery is set within 120 acres of Grade II listed park, landscaped by Capability Brown, the most eminent landscape architect of the eighteenth-century. Today the grounds still reflect his ‘pleasure grounds’ of sweeping grassland, ornamental lake and Cedars of Lebanon for which Brown is famous. The estate remained in the Verney family until 1921, when financial pressures forced the 19th Baron to sell it. It then passed through several owners, before being purchased in 1993 by the Peter Moores Foundation. The Peter Moores Foundation oversaw a £45 million restoration project to transform Compton Verney into an art gallery and visitor destination, which opened to the public in 2004. The estate’s historic buildings and Capability Brown-designed landscape have continued to be restored and maintained by the Compton Verney House Charity. We return to our hotel early afternoon, allowing time to relax and change, before we make our way to Stratford for our pre-show dinner and this evening’s performance of The Red Shoes.
Thursday 21st November
We enjoy a leisurely breakfast before we depart our Hotel and make our way into Stratford Upon Avon where we spend some free time before we commence our journey back to Sussex.
Having made a suitable stop en-route we expect to arrive back in the Maresfield area by approximately 18.00.
